A sustainable process
Pontenossa S.p.A. plays a strategic role within the steel supply chain, thanks to its ability to recover non-ferrous metals contained in residues mainly from electric arc furnace steel production (steel mill dust) and other zinc-containing residues.
With its own storage site, continuous controls and constant monitoring of emissions, Pontenossa S.p.A. is also able to manage its production residues internally, and sustainably, further reducing its environmental impact.
A state-of-the-art facility
The treatment of steel mill dust, a residue classified as special waste, is carried out using the Waelz process, which is classified as the BAT – Best Available Technique in the non-ferrous metals sector. This complex process reduces the environmental impact that would result from the direct landfill disposal of steel mill dust, while recovering secondary raw materials, such as Waelz oxide, that are then reintroduced into new industrial processes.
Pontenossa S.p.A. collects and recovers steel mill dust from 28 different Italian steelworks, representing 50% of all steel dust produced nationwide.
The Waelz plant at Pontenossa S.p.A. is fully integrated and includes:

rotary kiln
oxide washing plant
storage area for the production residues
water treatment system embracing all plant facilities, surfaces, and the production residue storage site
Thanks to this advanced plant, the entire treatment chain is controlled and constantly monitored, ensuring a high level of quality and strict safety measures for operators and the environment.
A second life for zinc
Metallic zinc is obtained from the Waelz zinc oxide produced by Pontenossa S.p.A.. Thanks to its chemical and physical properties, zinc is used in numerous industries with a variety of applications, including:
