Pontenossa partecipates to Circular Metallurgy

Pontenossa sponsored and actively participated in the International Meeting titled “Circular Metallurgy”, organized in collaboration with AIM (Italian Metallurgy Association) in Bergamo on November 28–29, 2024.

The conference brought together representatives of some of the main European (Befesa, KCM) and extra-European (Global Steel Dust, Zinc Resources) players who, like Pontenossa, process EAFD through the Waelz process, as well as representatives of IZA (International Zinc Association).

Pontenossa organized and managed, within the conference, an entire session dedicated to the Waelz process, entitled: “Waelz technology roadmap: towards a more sustainable Waelz process.” This session addressed and discussed topics such as:

• Analysis of EAFD, the relationship between chemical composition, contained phases, and Zn extraction yield;

• Impact on the Waelz process of using DRI (direct reduced iron) by EAF steelworks;

• Integrated process for Zn and Pb production at KCM;

• Analysis of the carbon footprint of the Waelz process;

• ZEP (Zinc Extraction Process) as a possible alternative to the Waelz process.
